Children at risk for fireworks eye injuries
The Fourth of July holiday is on the horizon and the barbeque preparations are underway. Fireworks are an annual tradition of Independence Day, but they can also be dangerous. Children and adults are often injured by improper use of fireworks. Of the 9,000 fireworks-related injuries each year, 21 percent are eye injuries and more than half of the victims are young children or teenagers.

Cedar Hill seniors receive more than a high school diploma
This year, 60 out of 61 seniors from Cedar Hill Collegiate High School participated in the Cedar Valley College Commencement exercises on May 16. Of those graduates, 47 received their associate degree from the college. The remaining students participated in the commencement exercises because they were within 12 credit hours of earning a degree.

Power Rangers visit Bowie Elementary students
James Bowie Elementary School was presented with a $5,000 donation last week from Haim Saban’s Power Rangers Megaforce as the winning school of the emPOWER Challenge! , a Power Rangers in-school enrichment program. The superhero group energized the crowd of more than 250 students and teachers during a school assembly with “Ranger Training” exercises and inspiration to eat right and “Train like a Ranger!”.

Dallas SWAT train at Bishop Lynch High School
Bishop Lynch Catholic High School and Dallas SWAT collaborated last week to make use of the school’s old buildings before its scheduled demolition to assist police with training. The SWAT school safety training was conducted from June 5 through June 8 after students left campus for the summer. Officers said it was an experience to train at a real school facility.

Cedar Hill Independent School District students and staff joined residents on May 4 for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the district’s student-run retail store “Longhorn Central.”. The store is located at 425 E. Pleasant Run Road, Suite 253 in Cedar Hill. The event also included a celebrity signing by Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray.

SWAC, MEAC Basketball Action (Feb. 5)
Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Wrap-up (Feb. 5) Mississippi Valley improved to 10-0 in the conference with a 70-58 win over Alabama State last Saturday night in SWAC basketball play. Kevin Burwell scored a career-high 23 points to lead Mississippi Valley. The Delta Devils, once 1-11, are now 10-0 in the SWAC and 11-11 overall.

Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Wrap-up (Jan. 30) Mississippi Valley increased their stranglehold on the conference with a 77-59 win over Grambling last Monday night in SWAC basketball play. Paul Crosby led MVSU with 19 points while Kevin Burwell added 16. The Delta Devils (10-11, 9-0) also got double-doubles from Cor-J Cox and Terrence Joyner, who each scored 11 points, with Cox adding 10 rebounds and Joyner 10 assists.

MEAC, SWAC Football Update
Norfolk State lost to Bethune-Cookman 14-6 last Thursday night in an HBCU showdown aired on ESPNU. The Spartans (6-2, 4-1 MEAC), who are near the top of the conference in offense, struggled against the Wildcat defense. Bethune took a 7-0 lead on an Anthony Jordan two-yard touchdown run. Everett Goldberg made a 50-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining in the second quarter to give NSU its first points of the game.

I hold a Master of Journalism degree from the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism at the University of North Texas. I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Southern University in May 2011. I served as sports editor for The Herald Newspaper while at TSU from 2008-2011. My goals after graduate school are to work in mainstream journalism or in corporate communications. My ultimate goal is to maximize my God-given talents and report untold stories and educate the public. I stand on the scriptures of Philippians 4:13 and Romans 8:28.
